Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 chipset could go by this name officially, will be unveiled on November 30th

Highlights
  • Qualcomm flagship processors going forward will have a ‘single-digit’ series and generation number naming structure.
  • The company has confirmed the name ‘Qualcomm’ will be used less in mobile-related product names as it is separating the Qualcomm and Snapdragon brands.
  • Qualcomm also says that it will only launch 5G-capable mobile platforms going forward.

Ahead of the Tech Summit on November 30th, Qualcomm has made some surprising announcements revealing changes to its branding strategy for mobile SoCs. The company claims that there are now over 2 billion active Snapdragon devices across the globe. Qualcomm has also confirmed recent rumours that claimed it will switch to a new naming scheme for its mobile platforms. The new name will be a “single-digit series and generation number.” This suggests the upcoming flagship chipset will be called Snapdragon 8 Gen1, although Qualcomm is yet to confirm the name. Without saying it outright, Qualcomm has confirmed this year’s chipset won’t be Snapdragon 898 as previously rumoured.

It remains to be seen what the Snapdragon 7, 6, and 4 series chipsets will be called considering there are multiple models in parallel. The chipmaker hasn’t mentioned a word on what they will be called, for now. The company has also confirmed the name ‘Qualcomm’ will be used less in mobile-related product names. It is separating the Qualcomm and Snapdragon brands and going forward, Snapdragon will be a standalone brand “with specific ties to the Qualcomm brand where appropriate”. Interestingly, the ‘5G’ suffix will be removed from mobile chipsets going forward as the company believes that 5G is present everywhere and is not required to warrant it anymore.

Qualcomm also says that it will only launch 5G-capable mobile platforms going forward, so there’s one more reason to remove the 5G suffix. Changes are also being made to the iconic Snapdragon fireball, which will “gain new prominence and manifest itself in new visual assets and other creative executions“. New representative colours are also introduced, including Gunmetal, Nickel, Midnight, Gold, and Snapdragon Red. Gold will now be used to represent only premium-tier products.
