OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro with Leica-branded cameras tipped

Highlights
  • OnePlus is tipped to have partnered with Leica for the upcoming OnePlus 9 series
  • OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro may come with Leica-branded cameras
  • OnePlus 9 series launch is expected in mid-March 2021

OnePlus 9 series launch is expected in March 2021, ahead of the company’s usual launch timeline, and there are reports that the lineup will include three models, including the OnePlus 9E. A recent schematic leak showed the standard OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will have two large camera sensors accompanied by up to other regular-sized lenses. While this caught our attention, details regarding the cameras are scarce at the moment. Now, a Twitter user Teme (@RODENT950) claims that OnePlus will partner with Leica, a popular manufacturer of cameras and lenses, for the upcoming OnePlus 9 series. Considering cameras on OnePlus flagships usually take backstage when compared to their overall performance, this should be an interesting development and a step up. OnePlus is yet to officially confirm the partnership with Leica, so we advise you to take this leak with a pinch of salt.

OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau in an interview with Input Mag said the company is working on improving the cameras on their phones “with a bigger focus on software and hardware.” While he didn’t explicitly mention the Leica partnership, it serves as a good hint. However, it remains to be seen whether all the models in the OnePlus 9 series will have Leica lenses or will be limited to the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus Pro models.

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are expected to come with a punch-hole design for the selfie camera, a rectangular camera module at the back with up to four sensors, and be powered by the latest Snapdragon 888 5G SoC. The Pro variant is said to have IP68 water and dust resistance, while the same may be missing on the standard variant. The much-rumoured OnePlus 9E may be an affordable variant that could come with the Snapdragon 7XX series chipset. We should learn more about the OnePlus 9 series camera specifications going forward.
