Xiaomi Mi 12 now tipped to feature Snapdragon 898 chipset and LPDDR5X RAM

Highlights
  • Xiaomi Mi 12 series could be in the works already.
  • The flagship is said to feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC and LPDDR5X RAM.
  • The Xiaomi Mi 12 series will succeed the Mi 11 lineup.

Xiaomi Mi 11 series has been quite successful for the company and it now looks like Xiaomi has shifted its focus to the Mi 12. The company might launch the flagship sometime later this year or in early 2022 and it may come with the newer Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. Now, a new report has revealed some key details of the Mi 12. The handset is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC, which is said to be the successor to the Snapdragon 888 chipset that powered the Mi 11. Furthermore, the Xiaomi Mi 12 is said to use the newly launched LPDD5X RAM, which was unveiled earlier this week. It pushes the maximum data rate from 6,400 Mbps to 8,533 Mbps. It is double what the LPDDR4X RAM.

Interestingly, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 870 chipsets do not support LPDDR5X RAM. So, it’s possible the upcoming Snapdragon flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 898 will come with LPDDR5X support. The SD898 is said to come with four cluster core layouts, configured in a 1+3+2+2 structure, meaning it would have four efficiency cores with two configured with a high-frequency clock and two lower frequencies. The three cores in the middle of the structure would be the performance cores, which could be further supported by the one, peak performance core. The latter is expected to feature the ARM X2 core and reports suggest it would be clocked at 3.09GHz.

A Mi 12 series phone, probably the Mi 12 Ultra, is said to feature a 200MP primary camera made by Samsung. The sensor is tipped to be 1-inch in size, which is the largest in the world. The camera will also support 16-in-1 pixel binning to produce 12MP shots. Since these are based on early rumours, there’s always a chance that things might change as we inch closer to the launch of the flagship.
