A brand new OnePlus Nord 2 unit reportedly exploded, causing trauma to the owner. Ankur Sharma from Bengaluru tweeted (later deleted) that his wife’s 5-day-old OnePlus Nord 2 “blasted” and smoke started coming out of the phone. Due to the blast, Sharma’s wife met with an accident and is in trauma following the incident. This is the first such instance of a OnePlus Nord 2 unit catching on fire. The company responded to Sharma’s tweet promising to investigate the matter. Sharma posted pictures of the damaged OnePlus Nord 2 (via LetsGoDigital).
The OnePlus Nord 2 blast images show the unit completely damaged. The rear panel, frame, and display have been burned. Even the Lithium-Ion protective bag is visible and the unit seems to have exploded from the inside, according to LetsGoDigital. As this is an isolated event, it does not mean that other OnePlus Nord 2 units are in danger of exploding. OnePlus is yet to come out with a statement on the incident and it seems the matter is still under investigation.
Following Ankur Sharma’s tweet, OnePlus Support tweeted, “We are gutted to hear about your experience. We are deeply concerned and want to make it up to you. We request you to connect to us over a direct message so that we can make amends and turn this around for you.” It is unclear whether OnePlus replaced Sharma’s wife’s unit or compensated in some other way.
There have been several cases of smartphone explosions in recent times. Earlier this year, a Redmi Note 9 Pro/ Pro Max unit caught fire spontaneously. After investigating, Xiaomi declared that it was a “customer induced damage” due to external forces. It will be interesting to see if OnePlus has a similar response to the OnePlus Nord 2 blast incident. We will update this story when we hear more.
