The upcoming Google Pixel foldable phone will reportedly use an ultra-thin glass cover for the inside display. As per various reports, the Pixel foldable device will feature a design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold series. It would feature a large display on the inside, and fold inwards. Now, a new report from Korea states that Google will use the ultra-thin glass (UTG) manufactured by Samsung Display. It’s not surprising to see Google and Samsung work together. Google recently announced that Samsung’s Tizen Watch OS will be merged with its wearOS.

Korean publisher ET News has reported that Samsung Display will be supplying its UTG to other smartphone manufacturers. The Galaxy Fold Z Flip and the Fold 2 from Samsung are the only devices right now that use Samsung Display’s UTG, but that’s about to change. The company will be supplying to Google, which is working on the Pixel foldable phone. The UTG is a thin glass sheet that’s applied on the internal screen of the foldable devices from Samsung. It’s flexible and durable at the same time, making it ideal for foldable phones.
Previously, Samsung used a plastic film for the foldable screen, but glass offers improved feel and protection. Other smartphone manufacturers are still using plastic film on their foldable devices. Luckily, Samsung Display is now expanding its foldable display business and will supply to other manufacturers in the second half of 2021. The company will also be supplying the ultra-thin glass alongside foldable panels, by increasing the price of the panels.
This decision could affect the competitive edge that Samsung Electronics’ foldable phones have over others, but that shouldn’t be a big deal. Samsung Display has always been ahead of other manufacturers when it comes to display technology, and has nevertheless supplied its panels to others.
