Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 SoC set to bring 5G support to affordable smartphones

Highlights
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 is the first Snapdragon 4-series chipset with 5G support
  • Phones powered by the Snapdragon 480 SoC are expected to launch soon
  • Snapdragon 480 chipset will bring 5G support to low-cost smartphones

Qualcomm Technologies has announced the Snapdragon 480 Mobile Platform and it is the first Snapdragon 4-series chipset equipped with a 5G modem. The 8nm-based processor is set to power mid-range and budget smartphones and will bring 5G to the masses. The chipset is equipped with a Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF System that supports both mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G, Standalone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) modes, Time Division Duplexing (TDD), Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD), and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). The Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 octa-core processor ships with the Adreno 619 GPU and Qualcomm Hexagon 686 is claimed to deliver up to 100 percent performance improvement in CPU and GPU and up to 70 percent AI performance compared to the previous generation, the Snapdragon 460 SoC.

The Snapdragon 480 5G supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology, which is again a first in the Snapdragon 4-series. The chipset features Qualcomm Spectra 345 ISP, the first triple ISP in a 4 series. The triple 13MP photo capture can deliver images from the ultrawide, wide, and telephoto camera all at once or capture triple 720 videos simultaneously. It supports FHD+ display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm aptX audio, streaming for HD content, and faster application load times.

The Snapdragon X51 enables multi-gigabit 5G connections and supports multiple frequencies for flexibility and accessibility. There is Qualcomm FastConnect 6200, Bluetooth 5.1, 2×2 Wi-Fi (dual Wi-Fi antennas), and features such as 8×8 sounding with multi-user MIMO. It supports dual-frequency GSP and NavIC for accurate location positioning.

Commercial devices powered by the Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform are expected to be announced shortly. HMD Global, Vivo, and OPPO are expected to be among the first OEMs to launch phones with the latest chipset.
