Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 mobile chipset has been launched and it comes as a slightly enhanced version of the 2018 Snapdragon 675. The new chip will power mid-range smartphones in 2021 and Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 678 comes with upgraded performance, dynamic camera features, and enhanced streaming capabilities compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the chipset “brings advanced mobile capabilities for daily entertainment at lightning-fast speeds over reliable connections and long-lasting battery life for consumers worldwide,” as per Kedar Kondap Vice President Product Management Qualcomm Technologies Inc.
Snapdragon 678 specifications
The Snapdragon 678 is a hexagon mobile processor with Kyro 460 AIE CPU cores clocked at 2.2GHz. The chipset is based on an 11nm process and is equipped with the Adreno 612 GPU for a ‘smooth, flawless’ in-app graphics experience. The chipset is optimized for Unity, Messiah, NeoX, and Unreal Engine 4, among other top games, and provides quick access to popular apps and content. There is Qualcomm Aqstic Audio technology as well for audiophiles.
The Snapdragon 678 SoC also supports Qualcomm Spectra 250L ISP with the proprietory’s third-gen AI engine and features like 4K video recording support, 5x optical zoom, portrait mode, low-light Capture, and laser autofocus create, among other things, which are rated to offer dynamic photography and videography. “Users can capture every moment in share-worthy detail and true-to-life colour through triple camera photos with up to 48MP and zero shutter lag,” the company said in its press release.
On the connectivity front, the Snapdragon 678 SoC highlights the Snapdragon X12 LTE modem that offers peak download speeds up to 600Mbps and upload speeds up to 150Mbps while supporting all major cellular modes plus Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) for increased capacity. Other features include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, NFC, Type-C, and Beidou/ Galileo/ GLONASS/ GPS/ QZSS/ SBAS.
