Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra Overview

As the name implies, the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra is built on the Galaxy S20 Ultra platform. It has the same screen, a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 1440p+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. However, you still need to set the rendering resolution to 1080p+ to get the 120Hz mode.

The Note20 Ultra’s display is the first mobile display to be protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. It’s better to resist scratches and survive drops from 2 meters on a hard surface. The device also has an ultrasonic fingerprint reader embedded in the display along with a 10MP selfie camera.

Samsung has even updated the S Pen and the Wacom layer for better 9ms latency. The experience is asserted to be as smooth as writing on a piece of paper. Users can convert notes to the Microsoft Office formats while the Samsung Notes provides seamless synchronization to further devices.

The S Pen of the smartphone can also be used for navigation with 5 new Anywhere actions. Users can even “Draw Shapes” in the air, go Back open Recent Apps, and go Home, and more.

On the rear, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra boasts a 108MP primary sensor leveraging pixel binning to output 12MP photos. The sensor can also record 8K videos at 24fps and cinematic ratio numbering to 21:9 while 1080p videos at 120fps. Furthermore, it gets optical stabilization but lacks Dual Pixel autofocus. However, the Phase Detection autofocus is now augmented with Laser AF with the 3D ToF sensor been cut down.

There’s also a periscope lens with 5x optical magnification and a following 12MP sensor, a longer zoom, and a brighter f/3.0 aperture combination to negate a shorter 1.0 µm pixels. The device offers a 50x space zoom. It also has a 120° ultra-wide-angle camera keeping a 1.0 µm f/2.2 12MP sensor.

Samsung is shipping the Galaxy Note20 Ultra with Snapdragon 865+ (10% faster than Snapdragon 865) to most of the global market except India, Nepal, and Europe that will have to settle with the same old Exynos 990 chipset.

By the way, users can also expand the storage via a microSD slot or the hybrid slot on the dual-SIM models.

Samsung will be hosting Microsoft games on the xCloud offering the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and more than 100 Xbox titles as of mid-September.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra battery has been bumped up to 4500mAh, which is 500mAh less than Galaxy S20 Ultra. The smartphone is bundled with a 25W wired charger and supports 15W fast wireless charging and 9W reverse wireless charging. Unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, it doesn’t support 45W charging.

The handset will be available in three colors options: Mystic Bronze, Mystic White, and Mystic Black. Both 4G and 5G (with mmWave) models will be available, but availability will differ by market.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Overview

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 is a significant dip from the ‘Ultra‘ variant carrying a 6.7-inch 1080p+ flat panel underneath the old Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Here’s why the Note20 Ultra and the Note20 naming actually makes sense.

Unlike the Ultra variant, the display gets a much lower 60Hz refresh rate. Hence, Samsung is clearly unable to supply a low latency upgrade to the S Pen.

As for the optics, the Samsung Galaxy Note20 boasts a significant upgrade from the Galaxy S20/S20+, including a 1.8µm pixels 12MP main sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus and OIS. On the other hand, the 1.0 µm 64MP sensor serves as a telephoto lens with a 3x lossless zoom & 30x space zoom, & an 8K video cam. Also, the device has a native 12MP ultrawide sensor as well.

The chipset situation is the same – the smartphone comes with original Exynos 990 in Nepal, India, and Europe, the upgraded Snapdragon 865+ elsewhere. However, there is 8GB of RAM and the 256GB of onboard storage and no microSD slot. The 5G model will also be available with 128GB of onboard storage.

The battery is also significantly bigger than before. At 4,300mAh, it trails the Note20 Ultra model only by a little. Anyway, the new battery will charge from 0% to 50% in just half an hour using the bundled 25W charger.

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 4G price starts at €950/£850, while the 5G model starts from $1,000/£950/€1,023. Similarly, the smartphone will be available in three colors — Mystic Bronze, Mystic Green, and Mystic Gray.
