Apple iPhone 14 unlikely to feature punch-hole design, no in-screen Touch ID either

Highlights
  • iPhone 14 may not feature a punch-hole design after all.
  • This contradicts an earlier report from noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that said the high-end Pro models in 2022 will have a punch-hole design similar to Android flagships.
  • The iPhone 14 lineup may not house an in-display Touch ID sensor.

iPhone 13 is just around a month old now but we’re already hearing more rumours about next year’s iPhone 14 series. The forthcoming flagships are tipped to adopt a punch-hole design to place the selfie camera. However, that might not be the case entirely. According to a now-deleted Weibo post from @PandaIsBald, Apple may not rely on the hole-punch cutout to house the TrueDepth camera system. This means the upcoming iPhone 14 should retain the notch but with a smaller footprint. However, the Pro models could get the punch-hole camera as suggested by tipster Jon Prosser and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

What the latest Weibo post means is that while Apple will introduce a hole-punch design, it could be hard for the company to abandon the notch altogether. @PandaIsBald has an accurate track record with some leaks. The account predicted correctly that the ninth-generation iPad would be announced at the September event. The latest leak means that iPhone 14 may continue to feature a notch. Notably, with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, the Cupertino giant did cut down the notch size in width but is slightly taller. It had to shrink the component sizes of the TrueDepth camera system and re-engineer the internals. It moved the earpiece to the top of the bezels, thereby freeing up the space.

This latest leak does make sense since analyst Ming-Chi Kuo did not mention how Apple will house Face ID on the high-end iPhone 14 Pro models. In addition to the punch-hole design, the leak claims the in-display Touch ID sensor will not be present in 2022, which goes on to suggest that Face ID will continue even on the iPhone 14 series.
