Snapdragon 888 Pro reportedly in the works, but don’t get too excited just yet

Highlights
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro 5G could be in the works.
  • The flagship chipset may launch around the third quarter of 2021.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro is said to be limited to China.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is the company’s current flagship chipset and is already a part of major premium phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, OnePlus 9 series, Mi 11 series, and iQOO 7 series, among others. Qualcomm Technologies usually has a habit of introducing a Plus variant of its flagship chipset, with superior clock speed and better GPU performance. Now, according to the noted tipster Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro is currently being tested and might see light in the day around the third quarter of 2021. However, before you get all excited there’s a catch about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro could be exclusive to China

Speculations are rife the Snapdragon 888 Pro will be limited to China and local smartphone brands will be using it. However, the chipset will be not that different from the existing standard Snapdragon 888. To recall, the SoC is built using Samsung’s 5nm process technology and adopts a 1+3+4 core configuration. The ultra-large Cortex-X1 core has a frequency of 2.84GHz. We can speculate the latter could be boosted to above 3GHz in the upcoming version. The Snapdragon 888 is aided by Adreno 660 GPU and X60 5G baseband, with a maximum bandwidth of 7.5Gbps.

It isn’t clear in which aspect the Snapdragon 888 Pro will be improved, considering the Snapdragon 888 is prone to overheating. There’s also a possibility of Qualcomm choosing TSMC for foundry because its 5nm process is more advanced and will reduce heat generation. We should learn more details about the Snapdragon 888 Pro 5G SoC sometime later this year so stick around.

Separately, the Weibo blogger has said there will not be any Snapdragon 700-series chipset this year. This means the current Snapdragon 780G will maintain its position for a foreseeable future.
