After the Snapdragon 888 5G flagship chipset, Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled the Snapdragon 870 5G SoC. This comes as a follow up to the Snapdragon 865 Plus and is based on the TSMC 7nm process. It features an improved Qualcomm Kyro 585 CPU prime core clock speed of up to 3.2GHz. The San-Diego based chipmaker says the chipset will deliver increased performance across the board for superior gameplay with Snapdragon Elite Gaming Experience. The chipset supports global 5G sub-6GHz and mmWave and Ultra-intuitive AI. For GPU, the Adreno 650 makes a comeback from the Snapdragon 865 SoC. The latest Snapdragon 870 will power affordable flagship phones from Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO and Xiaomi.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon has Hexagon 698 and the Tensor Accelerator is claimed to deliver the same 15 TOPS as the Snapdragon 865. It supports up to Quad HD+ panels at 144Hz refresh rate or 4K at 60Hz. The display can support HDR10+ and retains Spectra 480 ISP, with support for sensors up to 200MP, 8K video capture at 30fps, high dynamic range videos using HDR10+ and Dolby Vision standards. The Snapdragon 870 supports Wi-Fi 6 (up to 1.77 Gbps) and Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Voice and Adaptive. However, there’s no integrated 5G modem, instead, it will be paired with an external Snapdragon X55 modem.
For security, the Snapdragon 870 has support for Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor and Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max, and for biometric authentication, there is the fingerprint sensor, Iris, voice, and face unlock. The chipset supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ and LPDDR5 RAM and LPDDR4x RAM up to 16GB. While Xiaomi says it will focus on 5G and camera, iQOO mentioned it will bring a gaming phone with the Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform.
