Not all iPhone 13 models will get 120Hz display: report

Highlights
  • Only the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are now said to come with 120Hz OLED display
  • The iPhone 13 and 13 mini will reportedly feature 60Hz screens

After the iPhone 12 series, the Cupertino giant is said to have started working on the successor iPhone 13. Now, a new report sheds some light on the display of the ‘Pro’ models.  According to a report from ETNews, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will come with a 120Hz OLED display, meaning they will have the ProMotion display that we have seen on the iPad Pro 2020 models. While Samsung is said to be supplying the display for iPhone 13 Pro Max and 13 mini, LG is said to be the prime supplier for the standard iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. The new report comes in contrast to an early report that said all the models will have high-refresh rates.

The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 will reportedly have LPTS (LTPS is Low-Temperature Polysilicon), while the Pro variants are expected to feature LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) display with 120Hz refresh rate. Apple is said to have adopted the LTPO and LTPO-TFT to reduce the power consumption caused by the 120Hz displays. The report has also tipped the display sizes of the iPhone 13 series, which remains unchanged from the predecessor.

  • iPhone 13 mini — 5.4-inch LTPS 60Hz display
  • iPhone 13 — 6.1-inch LTPS 60Hz display
  • iPhone 13 Pro — 6.1-inch LTPO 120Hz display
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max — 6.7-inch LTPO 120Hz display

Furthermore, the LTPO technology will also allow Apple to vary the refresh rate as low as 1Hz depending on the content on the screen, thereby ensuring more screen-on time. Apple uses the same technology on the Watch Series 5 and 6. The report further adds that LTPO-TFT display will help SCM (supply-chain management) to grow. Apple will have to deal with component changes such as Driver-IC, RF-PCB, OLED emitters, and others. While there’s no exact timeline for the iPhone 13 launch, the unveiling should be held in September 2021 unless there are no delays like this year.
