Indian Gadget Awards – Best Phone of 2020 nominees: iPhone 12 Pro Max and Galaxy Note20 Ultra lead the pack

The most-awaited Indian Gadget Awards are back in their biggest avatar yet. 2020 will see 30 experts from the Indian tech media community as jury members, judging 22 award categories and over 100 nominees in the most prestigious tech awards event seen yet. And no gadget award ceremony is complete without talking about the absolute best smartphone of the year. Budget no bar, software no bar, design no bar, just the smartphone that caught the fancy of these tech experts the most in 2020. Let’s go through the nominations.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

Slightly later than usual, Apple unveiled its latest flagship smartphone to the world — the iPhone 12 Pro Max, in October this year. It is a smartphone that packs the latest and greatest that Apple has to offer in terms of smartphone technology. The smartphone packs in a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display, which is great for all your multimedia needs. And to keep it strong through your years of usage, the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with the exciting new Ceramic Glass coating that keeps your smartphone screen protected from scratches and cracks. Under the hood, this phone has some of the most powerful hardware that Apple is known for, headlined by the new A14 Bionic chipset.

Apple iPhone 12

If a large screen and a fat receipt aren’t your thing, the iPhone 12 is another great premium smartphone from Apple this year. Much like its Pro siblings, the iPhone 12 is also powered by the ultra-powerful A14 Bionic chip, which is touted to be the fastest in the world. Other than that, you get top-notch features such as Ceramic Glass, spill and splash resistance, and a superb Super Retina XDR OLED display. It also comes with a superior Night Mode, which is now part of both lenses on the back. This makes for crisp photography in low lighting conditions.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

Samsung also unveiled its most high-end Galaxy Note 20 Ultra this year. Packed with future-proof 5G support, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with additional benefits courtesy the bundled S-Pen stylus. It is a great smartphone for those who are creative, love to pen down thoughts, and want to scribble on the go. It has superb precision that lets you put down your imagination on to the display beautifully. Apart from that feature, it is a perfectly capable device, with a massive 6.7-inch 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass Victus, flagship 108MP quad rear cameras, and a lot more. The Mystic Bronze colour is also a differentiator for the smartphone, as are Wireless DeX and 8K video recording.

OPPO Find X2

OPPO’s flagship for the year was the Find X2. The Find X2 carries forward the legacy of gorgeous smartphone designs by the Chinese phone maker with its curved edge display design and premium back panel finish. In fact, high-density ceramic is engraved into the back panel to give it a premium feel and solid durability. Further to that, you get all the bells and whistles such as a 6.7-inch 3K QHD+ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and dual Dolby Atmos stereo speakers. The Find X2 shines on the camera front with its versatile flagship camera, which comes with a 48MP quad-camera setup coupled with 5x Hybrid Zoom for the perfect photography and videography.

Xiaomi Mi 10

The Mi 10 from Xiaomi is its most premium smartphone to date. With an astonishing 108MP quad-camera setup, the Mi 10 has specifications like no other. Well, you get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 3D curved AMOLED display, 30W wireless charging, and liquid cooling for your gaming needs. However, its attractive price point makes the Xiaomi Mi 10 possibly the most value-for-money smartphone on this list when it comes to a direct comparison between specifications and price. The 108MP camera is just a beautiful cherry on top.

OnePlus 8 Pro

The OnePlus 8 Pro is also a cool contender on this list, given its flagship specifications and design language. Whether be it the 5G-enabled Snapdragon 865 SoC, 48MP quad cameras, or Warp Charge 30 fast charging support, the OnePlus 8 Pro oozes of premium quality. On top of that, you get an elegant design that feels too good to hold in your hands. But what really makes the OnePlus 8 Pro a compelling buy is the presence of a super-smooth 120Hz Fluid display that makes mobile gaming, as well as navigating the UI in general, an absolute pleasure.

Motorola Edge+

Motorola is yet another phone maker that came out with a flagship smartphone that pleasantly surprised mobile fans in India this year. Much like Xiaomi’s Mi 10, the Edge+ also boasts of a 108MP camera sensor at the back, which is superb for clicking landscapes and more. You also get 5G support, up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, a massive 6.7-inch display for watching 4K videos, and a pure Android experience for those who don’t like bloatware or brand apps. But the USP of this Motorola smartphone is the presence of an HDR10+ display and a 108MP camera, which allow you to take the best shots and, in the process, view them in their full glory. It also has an Endless Edge display, which makes for the most immersive experience you get on a smartphone.

So, these were the nominations for the Best Phone of the Year. Every brand on this list has been released some quality smartphones across all price ranges, but these flagships really do stand out when it comes to providing the best user experience across things like camera, gaming, screen quality, and more. We hope you have a favourite among these, and you should definitely check out the winners once they are revealed a few days later.
