The best camera phone is never decided by the kind of hardware the device carries, but rather by the kind of photos and videos it is able to return with that hardware. In the year 2020, there were serious strides in the field of photography and videography by phone manufacturers. Multiple camera setups offering a diverse range of features made their way into the market, providing camera phone buyers too many options to choose from. The nominees for the best camera phones of 2020 are all magnificent photography tools, but the real winner will only be the one device that impressed our jury the most.
This jury consists of 30 experts from the Indian tech media community, who have come together for the most prestigious tech awards event in the country. The Indian Gadget Awards has a total of 22 award categories comprising of more than 100 nominees. The 30 experts, with their collective assessment, will crown the winners in each of the 22 categories, including the best camera phone. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the nominees for the best camera phone of 2020.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max
The largest of the four new iPhones this year was also the most feature-rich, naturally. Its rear camera cluster includes a trio of 12MP cameras (wide, ultra-wide and telephoto), backed by a LiDAR scanner to aid in AR tasks. The main camera of this device has something that isn’t present on any other iPhone 12 models – sensor-shift stabilisation. It basically allows the sensor to float around in order to counterbalance any movement within the camera. Apple has also introduced Apple ProRaw support on this year’s Pro models, while Night Mode is now also accessible in portrait mode. More importantly, iPhone 12 Pro Max captures Dolby Vision HDR videos, which renders considerably high amounts of details in the highlights and shadows, while also offering a wider array of colours.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is one beast of a smartphone overall, but its camera hardware is even more beastly. The main shooter is a 108MP f/1.8 unit, while its ultra-wide photography is handled by a 12MP f/2.2 camera. The third shooter on its back is a periscope-style 12MP telephoto snapper that offers 5x optical zoom and works together with the other hardware to render 50x hybrid zoom. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is adept at capturing 8K videos at 24fps, while its Single Take feature provides you with multiple outputs of a single scene using all of the phone’s cameras at the same time. This robust camera has plenty of other attributes that make it a darling of camera phone enthusiasts.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
Another Samsung phone to be nominated in this category, the Galaxy S20 Ultra, has a similar camera setup to that of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. It offers the same 108MP f/1.8 main camera and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera. However, its telephoto unit is a 48MP periscope-style camera that enables a whopping 100x hybrid zoom. Moreover, the phone also holds a TOF 3D sensor on its back. Features like Single Take, 8K video recording, Night Hyperlapse and Pro Mode are also offered by this smartphone. Plus, it also impresses with its 40MP front camera, which returns sharp, detailed and highly accurate selfies.
Xiaomi Mi 10
The Xiaomi Mi 10 is another phone in this category to sport a 108MP wide camera on its back. This shooter is accompanied by a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a couple of 2MP cameras for macro photography and depth sensing. The Xiaomi Mi 10 sports an all-new 7P lens that excels at light-gathering, allowing for richer photographs. Its AI Pixel technology allows for comprehensive pixel optimization to produce more vibrant pictures. Along with 8K videos at 30fps, this phone offers Pro modes for photos as well as videos. The Movie Mode on this device offers features like classic movie filters, real-time background blurring, colour focus filters, and more to encourage in the filmmaker in you.
OnePlus 8 Pro
The OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera offerings were greatly appreciated this year, and for good reason. Its quad-camera setup includes a 48MP f/1.8 wide camera, another 48MP ultra-wide camera, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 5MP colour filter camera. Apart from capturing stunning photos with all its cameras, this phone also enables something called Dynamic Videos, which maintains details in the highlights and shadows despite the lighting conditions being harsh. Nightscape 3.0 from OnePlus really helps in capturing rich and beautiful images in low light, whereas a Smart Pet Capture mode ensures that the camera settings are auto-adjusted for a perfect shot of your pet.
Vivo X50 Pro
The X50 Pro has been blessed with what Vivo calls the Gimbal Camera System. This system uses mechanical movement to achieve flexible 3D stabilization and deliver pro-level steadiness. The mechanism is present on the phone’s 48MP main camera, which is paired with an f/1.6 lens. This makes the X50 Pro an excellent phone for night photography. Its Extreme Night Vision mode and Astro Mode contribute greatly to this phone’s photography chops. There’s 60x hybrid zoom on offer as well, thanks to the 8MP periscope-style telephoto camera onboard.
