While we wait for the iPhone 15 series to launch, which is still months away, reports and rumors pertaining to the iPhone 16 lineup have already started to come up. A tweet by the tipster ShrimpApplePro that was picked up by MacRumors claims that the iPhone 16 Pro models will run on TSMC’s 3nm process-based A18 Bionic chip accompanied by LPDDR5X RAM. The iPhone 16 series may consist of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Ultra. The ‘Ultra’ moniker could be adopted by Apple with the iPhone 15 lineup itself where the iPhone 15 Pro Max could be renamed to ‘iPhone 15 Ultra‘
To recall, the current Pro models in the iPhone 14 lineup use LPDDR5 RAM while the non-Pro variants feature LPDDR4X RAM. According to the leaker, the iPhone 15 Pro series may not get any memory upgrade and instead will continue using LPDDR5 RAM this year as well. However, the RAM may see a jump from 6GB to 8GB, at least on the iPhone 15 Pros. Furthermore, prior reports have suggested that TSMC, Apple’s long-term chip supplier, is set to produce the A17 Bionic chipset on its newly built 3nm production lineup after it’s done making the M2 Pro chips.
iPhone 15 Pro specifications (expected)
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 lineup this year in September 2023. While the ‘Pro’ models may not get major upgrades and improvements, the whole series may finally see a USB Type-C charging port making iPhones more aligned with the rest of the products in Apple’s portfolio such as the iPad and MacBook, which have been sporting USB-C for a while now. Furthermore, the iPhone 15 Pro may get a periscope lens for enhanced zooming capabilities along with the A17 Bionic running at its core, as mentioned above.
