Google’s premium smartphones have finally returned to the Indian market after a brief three-year absence. The Google Pixel 7 has been only offered in one version in the Indian market, with 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, costing Rs 59,999.

On the other hand, the Apple iPhone 14 comes in three memory options, all of which come standard with 6GB RAM. The base 128GB storage model, 256GB option, and the most expensive 512GB storage option. Pricing for the base variant starts at Rs 79,900 and goes up to Rs 1,09,900.

Design

The Google Pixel 7 looks quite similar to the previous Pixel 6 in terms of style, with a slightly smaller flat display on the front with a center punch-hole housing the selfie snapper and a visor-like look at the back. Sustainable products are becoming more popular, and Google used recycled materials to create the Pixel 7. A dual camera array is neatly positioned within the visor, which is constructed out of metal this time around, and the phone weighs just under 200 grams with curved sides that help with the grip and in-hand feel. The added cherry on top is the IP68 rating which is usually missing in this price bracket.

The iPhone 14 shares the same DNA as earlier iPhone iterations.  It weighs 172 grams and is comparable to the previous iPhone 13 model. The cameras on the back are still oriented diagonally, and the sides are still flat and made of recyclable aluminium. Although this year’s Pro versions feature the new pill cut-out, Apple decided to preserve the full-fledged notch that houses the selfie and true-depth camera system for the regular 14 models. The screen size remains the same, while the speaker cutouts are located in the exact place, as are the volume rockers, power buttons, and ringer switch.

Display

Things diverge when it comes to the display. The Pixel 7 features a 6.3-inch OLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate for a more fluid experience, and a peak brightness of over 1200 nits. The new improved variant, which has the same central punch-hole for the selfie camera, has been tweaked by Google to have fewer bezels.

The iPhone 14 in comparison retains the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with 1200 peak brightness that was first introduced on the iPhone 13. While we had hoped Apple to finally add a high refresh rate ProRes display, the company instead delivered a 60Hz refresh rate panel. The phone still has that iconic notch on the top that houses the selfie camera along with the Face ID sensor suite.

Hardware

Moving on to the hardware, the Google Pixel 7 is now run by Tensor G2, the most recent version of the company’s own SoC. The foundation of Samsung’s Exynos processors is still there in this new SoC, which is built on 4nm fabrication. The Image Signal Processor (ISP), Tensor Cores (for AI & Machine learning), and a new GPU are what has changed. In India, there is only one version of the phone available, which has 8GB RAM, 128GB of internal storage, and three colour options. In addition, the Pixel 7 promises three major version upgrades and five years of security updates while operating on the most recent Android 13 operating system.

Google has decreased the battery size, which will affect battery life because the phone now has a smaller overall footprint. The Pixel 7 can be charged at speeds of up to 23W via fast wired charging, about 20W wirelessly, and 5W using reverse wireless charging.

The company has upgraded the front camera to 10.8 MP, enabling Face Unlock in addition to a number of other features. The number of AI-assisted functions in the camera app shows that the search giant is still leveraging its proprietary computational photography techniques.

The sensor-shift technology that was initially introduced on the iPhone 13 is still used by the iPhone 14, and the device’s rear cameras are still set up with a 12MP primary and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, while the Pro line now offers a new large sensor.
