Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi is all set to bring back its K series of smartphones to India. With the Redmi K50i launch today, the company would re-enter the premium segment of smartphones with its Redmi brand, which would compete with a host of other new entrants in India. On this note, the smartphone would sit at an interesting balance in the industry, and all eyes will be on the price to performance balance that the device offers in India. The smartphone interestingly featured in Reliance Jio’s latest 5G trials, which thereby confirmed the device’s 5G connectivity in India.

The Redmi K50i is confirmed to launch in India today. The launch event will be live-streamed on the company’s official YouTube channel, and will go live at 12 noon. We have embedded the link below for you to watch.

Redmi K50i price in India (expected)

Based on rumours, the Redmi K50i is tipped to be a mid-premium segment smartphone, and be launched in multiple variants that could span across a wide price band. It is important to note that the device could follow a similar trajectory as the Redmi K20 series – its last K series smartphone that was launched in the country exactly three years ago, in July 2019.

According to reports, the Redmi K50i could be priced between Rs 24,000 and Rs 28,000 in India for its base variant, which is likely to come with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It is also tipped to get a more powerful variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, which as per rumours could cost between Rs 29,000 and Rs 33,000.

Design

Based on industry reports, the Redmi K50i smartphone could be a rebranded but slightly tweaked version of the Redmi Note 11T Pro 5G, which was launched in China back in May this year, and also launched as the POCO X4 GT. The device measures 8.9mm in thickness and weighs 198 grams, which is a tad on the heavier end. The smartphone gets flat side edges, which is a new design language being adopted by numerous devices from Xiaomi and its sub-brands. For instance, the POCO F4 5G was also launched in India recently, bearing a similar design language.

To the rear, the smartphone gets a camera module with two large lenses for the primary and second camera units, while the third camera unit is housed within this uniformly designed unit. The front camera drill-hole slot lies to the centre of the display, and there are no other exceptional design flourishes on the device. There are three colour variants of the device in China – black, grey and a light shade of blue, but in India, Redmi may offer at least a dark shade of blue, among others.

Specifications

The 5G smartphone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8100 SoC, which is also the same processor that could power the device in India. This could be paired with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Other key specifications include a 6.6-inch full HD+ LCD display with 144Hz refresh rate, and HDR10 and Dolby Vision certifications.

To the rear, the smartphone may feature a 64MP primary rear camera, 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera as well. This could give it up to 4K video recording, while up front, it could feature a 16MP camera. The entire setup could be powered by a 4,400mAh battery with 120W fast charging in tow.

Other details include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity, USB-C for charging, and a 3.5mm audio port for connecting wired audio products as well. The fingerprint sensor could be integrated into the power button to the right of the smartphone.
