Jio 5G launch update: telco achieves over 1.5Gbps speeds in field trials across eight states

Highlights
  • Jio achieved a peak user throughput of over 1.5Gbps in its 5G field trials.
  • Jio tested a comprehensive suite of products, including M-MIMO, Macro, Outdoor, and Indoor Small Cell.
  • Jio reported a profit in its Q4 results, but continued to lose users due to tariff hike in December.

Jio 5G launch in India is just months away now. With the 5G spectrum auction expected to be held in June, telcos like Jio and Airtel are ready to deploy 5G services just a few months after. Realistically, we could see the launch of 5G network in India by September or October. In the meantime, Jio, Airtel, and Vi have been conducting 5G trials across the country. On Friday, Jio announced that it achieved 5G throughput speeds of over 1.5Gbps in field trials across eight states.

Jio announced its quarterly financial results on Friday. Additionally, the telco revealed that it had conducted extensive 5G field trials across eight states. Jio tested a comprehensive suite of products, including M-MIMO, Macro, Outdoor, and Indoor Small Cell.

In its 5G field trials, Jio achieved a peak user throughput of over 1.5Gbps speeds. This is, however, significantly lower than the trial speeds achieved by Vi. To recall, Vodafone Idea announced it had achieved peak 5G download speeds of 3.7Gbps during its trials way back in September.

Talking about Reliance Jio’s Q4 results, the telco reported on Friday that it made a profit of Rs 4,173 crore for March 2022, up nearly 25 percent from the quarter last year. That said, Jio continued to lose users for the third successive quarter. The primary reason behind this is due to the tariff hike in December.

“The combination of the tariff hike impact and higher data consumption boosted Jio’s ARPU, while the customer losses were triggered by the continuing clean-up of low-value customers as the telco looks to grow its active user base,” Rohan Dhamija, head (India & Middle East) at Analysys Mason, told ET.
