Highlights
  • Upcoming Samsung Galaxy S series smartphones could come with Mediatek chipsets.
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in two SoC variants depending on the region.
  • Samsung currently uses MediaTek chips on some Galaxy M, F and A series smartphones.

Samsung is reportedly planning to switch to MediaTek chipsets for its upcoming Galaxy S series smartphone units which will be sold in Asia. The Korean publication, Business Korea, reports that the upcoming Galaxy S series smartphones, including the Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy S23, may come with MediaTek chipsets. This is a switch from the Snapdragon or Samsung’s in-house Exynos chipsets it previously used for its premium smartphones range.

Currently, the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is sold in India, South Korea, USA, Australia, Canada, South Africa and UAE, while the European market gets the Exynos-powered Galaxy S series. The report suggests that the MediaTek chipsets might power half of the Galaxy S22 FE smartphones and the Galaxy S23 smartphones to be sold in Asia. The Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy S23 are expected to debut in the second half of 2022.

Which MediaTek chip will Samsung go for?

There is no word on which MediaTek chipset Samsung is eyeing for its upcoming flagship smartphones. The South Korean firm has previously used the Taiwanese MediaTek chipsets for its lower-end smartphones. Currently, there are plenty of flagship chips offered by MediaTek, which are more affordable compared to their Qualcomm counterparts.

MediaTek launched its most powerful SoC Dimensity 9000 late last year, which powers the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition, among other phones. It is yet to reveal details about its 2023 flagship chipset.

Samsung Foundry is reportedly working on the 3mm GAA (Gate All Around) chipset process node. The 3nm chips using the GAA design bring major performance and efficiency improvements compared to the current 4nm manufacturing process. The next Exynos chipset is said to be manufactured on the same 3nm process node.
