WhatsApp tipped to be working on 90-day disappearing messages feature

Highlights
  • WhatsApp 90-day disappearing messages feature is tipped to be in the works.
  • This joins the existing list of 7-days, 24 hours, and completely off options.
  • The 90-day disappearing option was spotted in the latest WhatsApp for Android V2.21.9.6.

WhatsApp disappearing messages feature was introduced back in November. Initially, there was only the option to auto-delete messages after 7 days. Earlier this year, the Facebook-owned messaging service introduced a 24 hours option and recently it added the ‘View Once’ feature that doesn’t allow pictures/videos to be opened again once the recipient views them once. Now, it looks like the social media giant is seemingly working on adding another option for message expiry — 90 days. Once the feature is rolled out in the future, users will be presented with a menu with options for 90 days, 7 days, 24 hours, and completely off (as shown in the screenshot below). As the name suggests, once the 90-day period is set, all the messages will disappear once the widow is reached.

WhatsApp 90 days

The 90 days disappearing messages option, for now, is being added to WhatsApp Android beta, as spotted by noted WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo in the latest version V2.21.9.6. Since WhatsApp usually keeps features in testing mode for quite some time, we’ll never know when it actually pushes to everyone.

WhatsApp recently rolled out the View Once disappearing photo and video feature. Once a user sends disappearing pictures/videos, the recipient will only be able to see them once. The feature is somewhat similar to the one on Instagram. While the pictures/videos can only be viewed once, the recipient can still take screenshots or use screen records to capture the media and view it again. To send disappearing photos/videos, users, first, need to have the latest version of WhatsApp installed and then open the app and select a photo or video that needs to be sent. Once selected, right beside the caption bar area, there’s a new ‘1’ icon, which means View Once, and users tap that before sending.
