Samsung Display begins production of 120Hz LTPO display for iPhone 13 Pro: report

Highlights
  • Samsung Display division will produce LTPO 120Hz panel for the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.
  • LG Display will make OLED screens for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini.
  • iPhone 13 series is expected to launch later this year.

iPhone 13 series is expected to launch later this year and there are quite a few expectations with the upcoming flagship devices. According to a new report from supply chain outlet The Elec, Samsung, and LG Display divisions have started production on the displays that will be in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. The latter will reportedly use a new LTPO display technology with 120Hz ProMotion support. LG Displays will make the OLED screens that will be used in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, while Samsung will handle the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max display panels.

Samsung is the lone supplier of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED panels that will support a 120Hz refresh rate. The Cupertino giant is apparently in plans to use Samsung’s LTOP TFT OLED for the top-end models, while LG’s low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT OLED panel for the lower-tier models. Samsung Display is expected to supply up to 120-130 million units of OLED panels to Apple this year, LG aims to up its order up to 50 million units. The report notes that this is around one month earlier compared to when production began on displays for the iPhone 12 series last year. To recall, the iPhone 12 series was delayed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the company had a tough time matching the demand for months. It could be that Apple hopes to iron any such issues prior to the iPhone 13 launch.

The inclusion of LTPO displays will allow iPhone 13 to offer 120Hz refresh rates without causing much impact on battery life. The proMotion was seen on the iPad Pro lineup since 2017 but hasn’t made it to iPhones yet. This should offer smooth animations and scroll all through the UI.
