Here’s how you can stop websites from sending annoying notification prompts in Google Chrome

Highlights
  • Google Chrome allows websites to send push notifications/notification prompts to users
  • You can block notifications for each website one by one as and when you receive a prompt to enable notifications
  • Alternatively, you can turn off notification prompts entirely by disabling “Sites can ask to send you notifications”

Browsers allow websites to send push notifications to users about new updates and articles published. While as useful as these notifications are, these can get annoying at times, especially when you’re working or just want to be left alone. To bring you out of any such misery, Google Chrome is finally allowing users to stop any and all websites from asking you for notification permission. There are two ways to stop notifications from websites within the Google Chrome browser. You can block notifications one by one as websites prompt you to enable notifications. While as simple as this sounds, it’s a tedious job to always tap the block button. Alternatively, you can stop all websites from sending this notification prompt in the first place. How? Read along.

How to stop websites from sending notification prompts in Google Chrome

Chrome Notification

Firstly, thanks to Steph Hippo, Site Reliability Manager at Google, for highlighting how to block website notification prompt. Firstly, head to the Notification section of the Settings menu in Chrome. Settings > Site Settings > Notifications. Alternatively, you can type chrome://settings/content/notifications into your address bar. From there, you can turn off notification prompts entirely by disabling “Sites can ask to send you notifications.” You can also toggle the Use Quieter Messaging option, which keeps the notifications from appearing when only performing tasks in Chrome.

You can also use this page to disable notifications for any site individually if you have previously enabled it. Scroll down to pick a site and click on the three-dots options menu on the right page of the page. The processor is slightly different on Android. Just head to Chrome > Settings > Notifications and then toggle notification off each site or the All Site Notifications toggle. While you will still see prompts, at least, it doesn’t send out notifications.
