Apple A15 Bionic chip production to reportedly start by end of May, will power iPhone 13 series

Highlights
  • Apple will start manufacturing its next-gen A15 Bionic chipset in late May.
  • It will likely use TSMC’s 5nm process – the same as its predecessor.
  • The iPhone 13 series is expected to use this new A15 Bionic SoC.

Apple is all set to start mass-producing its next-generation A15 Bionic chipset this May, MacRumors claims based on a DigiTimes report. The chipset will presumably be used in the upcoming iPhone 13-series of smartphones and maybe even the rumoured iPhone SE 3. Specifications of the chipset are largely unknown, but we assume that it will use the same 5nm TSMC process node as its predecessor. Apple has already booked a lion’s share of TSMC’s 5nm fab space, not only for the A15 Bionic but also for the M1 and its successors.

Apple is unlikely to deviate from its tried and tested hexa-core architecture, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. Then again, Apple largely competes against itself at this point, with the likes of Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek lagging miles behind. At best, we could see some IPC gains across the board, a better GPU, ISP, and AI engine. The real gains could come with the next generation of Apple silicon, and it’ll be interesting to see what Cupertino has in store for us.

Apple is scheduled to launch the iPhone 13 series in September this year. Many leaks consider the iPhone 13 to be an incremental upgrade over its predecessor. A smaller notch and slightly better cameras are expected, too. There is, however, at least one significant upgrade. Several reports suggest that the iPhone 13 Pro could feature a 120Hz LTPO display- the first-ever in Apple’s repertoire.
