Qualcomm Technologies has announced Snapdragon 780G 5G Mobile Platform chipset in the chipmaker’s 7-series. The octa-core processor features two Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and Adreno 642 takes care of graphics. It comes with Qualcomm Spectra 570 triple ISP and 6th generation AI Engine. The former allows capturing from three cameras, including zoom, wide, and ultra-wide-angle lenses simultaneously, which is a first for the 7-series platforms. Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G’s 6th generation AI Engine with the Qualcomm Hexagon 770 processor delivers up to 12 TOPS AI performance, which is a 2x improvement compared to its predecessor.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G is based on the 5nm architecture and is equipped with the 2nd generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub, which integrates a dedicated low-power AI processor for audio processing and Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming that is claimed to deliver desktop-level capabilities including GPU drivers, ultra-smooth gaming, and True 10-bit HDR gaming. It features a Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF System that offers peak download speeds of 3.3Gbps on sub-6GHz frequencies, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth audio features, and Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound technology. It features Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Connectivity System that allows the chipset to support multi-gigabit class Wi-Fi 6 speeds and VR-class low latency.
Furthermore, there is Wi-Fi 6E support that is capable of extending the advanced feature set to a powerful 6GHz spectrum. The chipset can record HDR10+ videos and 4K HDR with computational HDR capture offers dramatic improvements to colour and contrast. Lastly, Qualcomm says commercial devices based on the latest Snapdragon 780G are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2021.
