PS5 restock in India unlikely to happen before the end of March: report

Highlights
  • PS5 stocks are unlikely to arrive in India before the end of March 2021
  • PS5 restock was initially expected to happen in the first week of March
  • There is still no word about the PS5 Digital Edition India launch date

PS5 has been particularly hard to come by in India, even after its (somewhat) messy launch in February. A fresh round of PS5 units was expected to arrive in early March. However, that seems to have been delayed to the end of the month, according to a report by IGN India. Sony has advised all of its official partners to refrain from collecting any PS5 pre-booking money from consumers. Furthermore, it has also asked the outlets not to make any commitments about immediate restocks. Therefore, we can reasonably assume that fresh PS5 stocks will arrive later than initially anticipated.

One of the main reasons for the severe shortage is that India got a total of 4,000 PS5 units, with a majority of small players receiving three or four units on launch day. Although a lion’s share of that went to e-commerce websites, they disappeared within a matter of minutes due to high demand. To make matters worse, many of the units have been picked up by scalpers, who are selling them for astronomically high prices. Then again, the situation is more or less the same globally, with severe component shortages hampering the mass-production of consoles.

There is still no word about when Sony plans on launching the PS5 Digital Edition in India. The disc-less PS5 variant is cheaper in India by Rs 10,000 compared to the Blu-Ray version and does not compromise on hardware, unlike the Xbox Series S. Looking at the grim state of affairs, it is unlikely that the PS5 Digital Edition will be released in India anytime soon. Sony India’s total indifference about the matter doesn’t help much, either. However, PS4 owners can still eke some more value out of their aging console, as it will likely remain relevant for another year or so.
