Apple unveiled the new Apple Watch Series 6 with Apple Watch SE alongside at its virtual ‘Time Flies’ event on Tuesday. The latest wearable comes with two sizes 40mm and 44mm with ceramic or sapphire finish.
The smartwatch appears similar to the previous iteration with a rectangular-shaped dial, but the Watch Series 6 now gets a new Blue and Product Red aluminum finishes. It uses the same chassis seen on the Series 5; however, Apple has made some incremental upgrade in terms of hardware.
Apple Watch Series 6 Specifications and Features
Apple Watch Series 6 uses the new Apple S6 dual-core chipset, which is claimed to be up to 20% faster than the previous generation. Further, the new Apple wearable is the first to inherit a U1 chip that has ultra-wideband (UWB) technology that enables short-range wireless connectivity and allows the Watch Series 6 to be used as a digital key for your car.
As for the health and fitness functionality, Watch Series 6 can now measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) with the new health sensor. The watch prompts an alert if the blood oxygen level drop below the reference number 95 and 100%.
The bottom of the watch integrates the 2nd gen heart rate monitor. Apple claims that with the ECG app, the Watch Series 6 will be capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. Meanwhile, watchOS 7 can use heart rate data to give VO2 Max reading and track the overall fitness level.
The Apple Watch Series 6 features a retina display and comes with an improved always-on mode which is claimed to be 2.5 times brighter outdoor when the user’s wrist is down. The retina display has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and a refresh rate of up to 60Hz.
There is a new always-on altimeter as well that is said to follow your ascent depending on the activities you carry in real-time. Apple cited that users will be able to access the Notification Center and Control Center and swipe to change faces without waking up the watch screen.
Talking about additional features, watchOS 7 is updated with a new Family Setup feature that will let users set up location alerts to know the whereabouts of their family members. There’s a Schooltime feature for kids that will help them stay attentive while learning at home or school. Moreover, the feature has been optimized for older adults too, with a simplified onboarding and configuration process.
Apple also announced the Fitness+ service that will sync the watch with Apple Watch Metrics and offer a library of workout-based videos.
Apple Watch Series 6 provides a backup of up to 18 hours and has fast charging support. It is touted to complete a full charge under one and a half hours.
That aside, the Watch Series 6 comes with 7 new watch faces including GMT, Stripes, Typograph, Memoji, Artist, Chronograph Pro, and Count Up. These watch faces will be available only for the new Watch Series 6, Watch SE, Series 5, and Series 4. Notably, the new watch face options are available in the watchOS 7 Golden Master that was released on Tuesday.

The new Apple Watch Series 6 will be available for pre-order in the US starting today via Apple’s dedicated website and Apple Store app. The watch will be released beginning September 18 in the US, Puerto Rico, and 27 other countries and regions.
