It was a silent Apple autumn event this year. No doubt, many bloggers, correspondents, and fans were glued to their devices to witness the virtual ‘Time Flies’ event. But the after event hustles with the crowd testing out new Apple products at the kiosk was what we missed this time.
As always the Cupertino tech giant introduced a host of products, some of which were upgrades to the previous iteration. But what caught our attention this time was the lower-priced Apple Watch SE.
The new Apple Watch SE has been launched for a price of $279. Apple has tried to keep the price in line with the wearables offered by its rivals Samsung, Huawei.
Apple Watch SE Specifications and Features
The Apple Watch SE carries some features similar to the new Apple Watch Series 6. The looks are identical to the Watch Series 6 and it has a Retina display. The Apple Watch SE gets always-on altimeter, fall detection, and sleep tracking as well. Encased in an aluminum frame (recycled), it is available in two sizes- 40mm and 44mm.
But for the price, Apple has skimmed some of the core aspects from the Watch SE. For instance, the ECG functionality (that debuted with Series 4), the always-on display, and the new blood oxygen monitor which is available on the Watch Series 6 hasn’t been implemented on the affordable Apple wearable.
It’s a bit disappointing though, as many renowned smartwatch brands offer wearables with Sp02 monitoring for a price lower than the Watch SE.
But speaking of the features that Apple Watch SE has to offer, it equips the S5 System in Package (SiP) and a dual-core processor that was chipped in Watch Series 5 which means performance won’t be a factor to worry about. It has an optical heart rate sensor (2nd gen), accelerometer, gyroscope, and ambient light sensor.
Apple Watch SE offers 32GB storage capacity and includes Emergency SOS, noise monitoring, and international emergency calling under its safety kit. With the recent pandemic causing disruption worldwide, Apple has taken a proper step in this regard, adding a reminder to wash hands for the ‘recommended 20 seconds.’
Moving on, the Watch SE supports Pay and GymKit and has a microphone and speaker for call support. As for the add-ons, the SE runs watchOS 7 and supports Apple’s new Family Setup which will allow parents to set up and manage the Watch for their kids, including options like location alerts, monitoring activities, and enabling kids to find apps.
There’s a new Apple Face Sharing feature as well that will let you share watch faces with others. Apple Fitness+, a new activity app, is packed as well, which will provide virtual classes and workout tracking.
In line with Apple’s commitment to the environment, the Apple Watch SE case is made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. In addition, Apple is removing the AC adapter that could become electronic waste from Apple Watch SE packaging and helping its Apple Watch manufacturing partners transition to renewable energy.
